1967-1973 Mustang Del-A-Lum Bushings and Shackle Kit (For the Global West Reverse Eye Leaf) # 114SH
This kit is for a reverse eye cat-5 mustang performance rear leaf spring. The difference between a cat-5 reverse eye leaf and standard reverse eye is the rear leaf spring eyelet dimension. The cat-5 is larger, it will measure approximately 1.625 inside dimension. A standard reverse eye rear leaf spring will measure approximately 1.350 inside dimension. Before ordering a Del-A-Lum shackle kit, please check your rear leaf spring eyelet dimension. The smaller bushing kit part number is a 105SH. Del-A-Lum bushings are perfect for street, drag and autocross applications. Installation requires the bushing housings to be pressed into the frame and the leaf spring eyelets. Inserts and thrust washers separate the housings and springs from metal to metal contract and provide total isolation. The inserts and thrust washers also provide a bearing surface for the bushing. This design makes the bushings operate similar to a bearing. Grease fittings are installed and the housing is grooved internally for grease penetration. Del-A-Lum bushings also provide lateral control of the leaf springs. Why run Del-a-lum bushings for drag racing? When a vehicle leaves the line hard in a drag race application, the forward portion of the leaf will try to deflect inboard. This action will make the car walk sidewalks. Del-A-Lum bushings will stop the leaf spring from walking inboard. Now if you have a Caltrac or something equivalent, a lot of people will use rubber or poly for rear shackle bushings. We don't recommend this, because rubber and polyurethane will allow the rear portion of the leaf to walk laterally. If the front bushing is solid mounted, the length of the leaf becomes a long torque arm reacting on the forward mounting point. It is trying to twist the front mount out of the car. The solution is to use a Del-A-Lum shackle kit and remove the problem. We make special rear shackle kits for drag racers using this type of traction kit. The kits do not have front eye bushings because they are not needed. Autocross applications: Generally leaf spring bushings during hard cornering allow the rear end to move laterally. This creates a rear end tracking problem that is evident with tire rubbing and sluggish suspension response. This can also promote oversteer. Some people install a panhard rod to help control lateral movement. The beauty about using Del-a-lum bushing is they do not allow lateral movement. The differential remains centered, eliminating the need for a panhard. As stated before panhard rods are used to control lateral movement but technically crate lateral movement because the rod works in a arc. Therefore if you use a panhard rod with Del-a-lum bushings, in this application, you will create bind in the rear suspension. You don't need a panhard rod. NOTE: This Del-A-Lum shackle kit is shipped complete with front and rear eyelet bushings, frame bushings, shackles, and related hardware.
